Official Mission
Established 1971 · Reaffirmed irregularly
The Bureau of Recreational Vehicles was established under the National Recreation Survey Act of 1971 as a small independent agency charged with the documentation, classification, and ongoing reference of American recreational vehicles in active service.
The Bureau maintains a live reference collection at an undisclosed regional facility (Region IV, Texarkana), publishes irregular Bulletins on individual exhibits, and operates a small staff of senior curators, fellows, and visiting documentarians.
The Bureau is, by its founding statute, independent. It is not affiliated with the Department of Transportation, the Department of Commerce, or the National Park Service. Inquiries to those agencies regarding the Bureau will be returned without comment.
